BPA Free Label Solutions

Keeping you one step ahead of EU labelling regulations

If you are using a thermal paper label or receipt rolls, sometimes referred to as Direct Thermal or DT, you may want to consider switching to a Bisphenol A (BPA) free material. Research has found this commonly used chemical to be an endocrine disruptor / cell blocker which may be a cause cancer in some severe cases. You may have already heard of BPA as the main reason for switching from plastic to metal water bottles. The president of Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry recently stated that “there is more BPA in a single thermal receipt paper than the total amount leached from plastic water bottle over many years”. The research is still on-going and the safety of the chemical depends largely on how often you come into contact with it. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) revealed in 2015 that at current exposure levels there is no health risk to consumers of any age, however there are some uncertainties in their findings and they will continue to investigate. BPA has also been included on the Regulation, Evaluation Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC).

Why is BPA used in thermal (Direct Thermal /DT) labels and receipt papers?

BPA is a synthetic chemical compound that turns black when in contact with heat, offering a low cost and easy way of producing labels and receipts. It is also used in various other products such as CD’s, sports equipment and as mentioned above plastic water bottles to name a few.

What can we do to help as a manufacturer and supplier of thermal labels and paper?

We already have a specially developed range of BPA free, Bisphenol free and Phenol free materials we can offer you. Our labels are high quality, cost effective and available in thousands of sizes from our stock tooling range or custom sized for any label printer or application.  As one of the few Zebra supplies partners in the UK, we can also offer you Zebra genuine BPA free material options from their ZipShip size range or in higher volumes even custom sized supplies.  If you are currently using thermal paper labels or receipt paper and want to review pricing on a BPA free alternative we would be happy to send you a quotation, we may even be able to reduce your current supplies spend in the process.

All thermal papers sold will be subject to EU legislation and must be BPA free by 02.01.2020. The regulation is primarily to reduce to risk of over exposure of this chemical for retail workers (e.g. cashiers) and consumers handling receipts or labels printed on thermal (DT/ Direct Thermal) paper. If you or your employees are using thermal (DT) labels and hand applying them, this is another common way to come into contact with BPA.
